Computers and Technology – Short History of Computers

The development of computer machine used in today’s world has its beginning. A well known English and mathematics professor by the name Charles Babbage initially formulated and designed the Analytical Engine which forms the basic framework used on the current computers.Generally, computer machines have developed in recent years and have been classified into three specific generations.

It’s evident that each of these generation lasted for period of time, as they were being developed, each generation either led to an improvement to an existing computer or a new and improved computer framework system.

First generation computers developed in the year 1937 – 1946.

In the year 1937, the first digital electronic computer machine was built and designed by Clifford Berry and Dr. John V. Atanasoff, these first generation computers were called the (ABC) Atanasoff-Berry Computer. Seven years later, another electronic computer by the name Colossus was designed and built specifically for the military, on the other hand, new developments continued until the year 1946 where the (ENIAC) commonly referred to as Electronic Numerical Integrator Computer and the first general– purpose digital computer were designed a build.

It’s believed that these computers weighed an average of 30 tons, and incorporated about 18,000 vacuum tubes which were generally used for information or data processing. It’s also evident that lights dimmed in sections and parts of Philadelphia when the first class generation computer machines were turned on for the first time. These computers were designed to perform only one single task and had no operating system installed in them, they were very huge and could fit the size of a room.

The Second generation developed in the year1947 – 1962.

This second generation computers were designed to use transistors, unlike the first generation computers which used vacuum tubes, these transistors were more efficient and reliable. In the year 1951, the first commercial computer was developed and introduced to the public; this computer was commonly referred to as the UNIVAC {Universal Automatic Computer} likewise in the year 1953, the (IBM) series 650 and 700 popularly known as International Business Machine computers, made their entry in the computer technology world.

Over 100 computer programming languages were developed during the second generation of computers; they had operating systems and memory installed. Media storage devices such as disks, tape and output devices such as the printers were used together with these computers.

The Third generation computers developed in the year 1963 to present

The integration and invention of circuit led developers to the third generation computers. Unlike the second and the first generation computers, the Third generation computers became smaller, reliable and more powerful with the capacity and ability to multitask. In the year 1980 (MS-Dos) popularly known as Microsoft Disk Operating System was designed and the IBM computer developers first released this small computers having the operating system.

Since then, there have been different releases of operating systems from different developers such as Apple who introduced the Macintosh computer having Windows operating system with its icon driven interface, there are so many operating system in the market today.

Due to this improvements in the development of computers from first generation to third generation, computer are currently used in almost all areas of life, in hospitals, offices, in school or at home thus a very useful tool in the life of an individual.
